Floral patterns show up every year around this time, on everything from dresses to shoes. So, it’s no big surprise to hear that flowers are fashionable yet again. But what might surprise you is the type of florals we’re seeing, and the way they’re being worn. You could even say surprising florals are the latest unexpected trend!
One of hottest looks right now is tropical prints, including tropical flowers. Fenty Puma, Michael Kors, and Coach all embraced the tropics on their SS18 runways, showing garments featuring hibiscus flowers and other island imagery. These exciting patterns have made their way into mass market stores. And, of course, you can always visit your local surf shop where tropical looks never go out of style.
The only patterns bigger than tropical prints are retro and vintage florals, specifically 60’s inspired designs. Imagine the large flowers and bold colors from your grandma’s wallpaper, but more chic. Designers loving this retro fad include Marc Jacobs, Marni, Miu Miu, and Thom Browne. Raid your mom’s closet, visit the local thrift store, or just hit the mall or your favorite online store to shop bright, bold retro florals.
What if you already have a closet full of florals and you’re just not willing to invest in more? No problem. The simple solution is to wear those existing items in new and surprising ways. British Vogue offers several suggestions, including pairing delicate florals with an animal print, pastel puffer jacket or tracksuit. And you can always pair your florals with an unexpected neutral like tan or khaki.
If you’re someone who just loves florals year-round, good news! If the AW18 Gucci and YSL runway shows are any indication, this trend will continue at least through the end of the year.
