Sex and the City defined an era and changed television forever. It celebrated singledom and female friendships in a way no series ever had before. It was a heartfelt, six-season-long love letter to a geographical location. And, above all, it emboldened fans to dress up, explore their style and have fun with fashion. The very first episode of the iconic series aired on June 6, 1998. More than twenty years later, we still see the show’s impact on contemporary fashion. So why not celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sex and the City with a look inspired by one of its four fabulous female characters?
Suit Up Like Samantha: Both Samantha and Miranda were known to strut their stuff in power suits. But with her bold color choices, it was Samantha who really made the suiting statement. Hilary was also seen wearing pant suits during her 2016 run for office. As evidenced on the Fall 2018 runways, the trend is still going strong. With dozens of stylish fabrics and fits to choose from, there’s bound to be a look for you.
Think Pink Like Charlotte: Charlotte, the pretty preppy of the group had a penchant for retro styling, feminine fits and the color pink. Whether you prefer pastel or bright shades, pink is one of the hottest colors going and so easy to wear. Add a splash of color to a favorite outfit or go for an all-out head-to-toe homage. Add a string of pearls or a headband for an extra nod to the Park Avenue princess.
Rock a Cropped Cut Like Miranda: Fashion isn’t always about the clothes. Over the course of six seasons, Miranda’s signature red tresses went through several styling iterations; but she always kept her hair short and chic. Considering a radical change? Look to stylish celebs Zoë Kravitz, Claire Foy and Scarlett Johansson for inspiration.
Be Unexpected Like Carrie: Carrie, the most outrageously fashionable of the bunch, was known to put together outfits even the boldest among us wouldn’t have dared to try to pull off. Tulle skirts, crop tops, fanny packs and sweatpants with heels all looked fabulous on Carrie. But who would dare? Today celebrities are wearing these looks and looking great – so much so these trends might be worth trying. Nicole Kidman was stunning in tulle at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Kendall Jenner was just one of dozens sporting crop tops and fanny packs at the Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival. And if you can pull off sweats with heels like Jenna Dewan and Rihanna, why not?
